How America’s Greatest Train Car Maker Became a Tank Factory

Pullman-Standard was once the company that defined luxury rail travel in America, building elegant sleeping cars known as “Palaces on Wheels.” But when World War II arrived, the same factories that crafted passenger cars were transformed into wartime arsenals. Inside massive plants in Hammond and Chicago, workers shifted from building railcars to producing M4 Sherman tanks, warships, artillery shells, and military equipment for the Allied war effort. But after surviving war, monopoly battles, and the decline of passenger rail, Pullman-Standard faced a future it could no longer control. #PullmanStandard #ShermanTank #MilitaryHistory
