What Happens When You Hook A Protected Giant

In this video, I head out on the water with Ted Walkus, manager of Good Hope Cannery and close friend of mine. Along with Tony Nootebos from BC Sport Fishing Group for an unforgettable day chasing one of the most legendary fish in British Columbia: sturgeon. We launch on the Harrison River, which connects to the mighty Fraser River, a world-renowned system for these prehistoric giants. Along the way, we dive into the important work being done behind the scenes to protect and sustain the sturgeon population. Tony shares how BC Sport Fishing Group works closely with the Sturgeon Conservation Society and other organizations, contributing to research, tagging programs, and conservation efforts that help ensure these incredible fish are around for generations to come. I’ve caught a juvenile before, but this was a completely different experience. Powerful, intense, and honestly a little humbling. I was basically just fighting to stay on the boat. After about 14 minutes, Ted stepped in to take over and brought the fish up alongside us. Once we realized it was foul hooked, we made the call to release it immediately to avoid putting any additional stress on the fish — no measurements, no tag check, just a quick and respectful send-off back into the river. Huge thanks to the guys for their support and knowledge out there. Moments like this are why I love being on the water. Thanks so much for watching and remember to subscribe, and stay tuned because we’ll be heading back up for another season of lodge life very soon!!
