Cilentano.it ad Altavilla Silentina: qualche scorcio del centro storico ed un po' di storia

Cilentano.it - The discovery of a Neolithic axe in Pietra Marotta dates the origins of the first settlements in Altavilla Silentina. The discovery is attributed to the Enotrian people. Other ancient artifacts have been found in the area, including several Greek, Arab, and Roman coins. Doubts still remain about its origins, perhaps Paestum, then Roman, and Norman. The most likely hypothesis is that Altavilla arose on the ashes of ancient Carilla (now Borgo Carilia). The Altavilla area may have been the site of the battle where Spartacus (and his 60,000 slaves who rebelled against Rome) suffered their final defeat in 71 BC at the hands of the Roman General Pompey. Altavilla Silentina is a beautiful village at the gateway to Cilento. The town is full of narrow streets and picturesque views that transport us back to a distant, very picturesque time. Must-sees: the Convent of San Francesco, built in the 15th century by the Franciscan Friars Minor; the Foce Sele-Tanagro Nature Reserve, a protected natural area that includes part of the coastline between Salerno and Paestum. The medieval village of Altavilla Silentina is located on a hill that rises from 275 meters above sea level (at the threshold of the "Porta San Biagio"), the entrance to the medieval town, to 313 meters above sea level at the Norman castle and the current Piazza Umberto I. The town hall is located in the square. Altavilla enjoys a panoramic view of the Sele Plain. From here, you can admire the island of Capri, the Lattari Mountains (of the Amalfi Coast), and a panoramic view of the city of Eboli. The town and its hamlets offer a wide selection of accommodations and restaurants where you can sample traditional Cilento dishes: from typical fusilli with ragù to lagane and chickpeas. Last but not least, the area boasts a remarkable production of dairy products. Altavilla Silentina is a typical Cilento town, quiet and offering visitors relaxation, comfort, and excellent services. Its strategic location allows you to reach the temples of Paestum and the heart of Cilento in just a few minutes. --- It's a shame about the rain: we couldn't fly the drone, and... we'll be back!
