As I’ve been working hard on acquiring as much footage as possible for my documentary, I’ve stumbled across so many hidden gems. Revisiting the pioneers of this beautiful culture has been a real privilege. One artist I’ve slept on for way too long is Seiko Ito. This man is a legend—one of the key figures to truly pioneer rapping in Japanese, often paired with cutting-edge production that still holds up. If you haven’t already, I highly recommend his 1989 album Mess/age. It’s an absolute masterpiece.
