After that, I got on the Joetsu Line and headed to Toge Station, also known as the mole station with the highest elevation difference between the up and down lines in Japan🎒‼ ️It was hot that day, but... Toge Station was a chilly and thrilling experience💦💦 ■What is Toge Station? Doai Station is located in the mountains, with the up line at ground level and the down line underground. It is an unmanned station with no permanent station staff. The biggest feature of this station is that the up and down platforms are far apart. This is because the down platform was installed in the Shin-Shimizu Tunnel, 70 meters underground, when the Joetsu Line was double-tracked, and there is a height difference of 81 meters between the aboveground where the station building and up platform are located and the down platform. To get from the down platform to the station building, you need to climb 462 steps (338 meters long) that stretch almost in a straight line, and then climb a total of 24 steps in a 143-meter connecting passage that straddles the Yubiso River and National Route 291. It takes about 10 minutes to walk from the ticket gate to the down platform, so when the station staff was stationed, the ticket gate was closed for down trains 10 minutes before departure, and this was also stated in commercially available timetables. There is a bench near the middle of the stairs. There is space for an escalator next to the 462-step staircase, but there are currently no plans to install one.
