Die Melodie stammt von Karl Theodor Weigel, nach 1922. Johann T'Serclaes Graf von Tilly, geboren im Februar 1559 auf Schloss Tilly im Herzogtum Brabant, war Feldherr im Dreißigjährigen Krieg. Er war oberster Heerführer sowohl der Katholischen Liga als auch ab 1630 der kaiserlichen Armee. Am 15. April 1632 wurde er in der Schlacht bei Rain am Lech schwer verwundet und starb am 30. April 1632 in Ingolstadt.
