PS Marion 2026

PS Marion 2026 Close and personal look aboard the PS Marion on one of her day trips. A sumptuous feast of visual nostalgia, old world atmospheric sounds and pungent wafts of a steam driven yesteryear. The Paddle Steamer Marion was originally constructed in 1897 as a barge. This historic South Australian vessel still plies the mighty Murray River with a team of dedicated volunteers as its crew. Thousands of hours have been given by volunteers to her restoration and preservation. Recorded in 5.1 surround sound, the atmospheric bell commands, steam whistle and classic steam engine noises are accompanied by Murray River Gypsies background music, creating the sound scape for her 2 hour voyage. Informative visuals show the ‘Fireman’ feeding’ wood into the boiler furnace. No trip would be safe without the piloting of experienced Captain Jim Maywald. This three story steamer has double bunk cabins for more intimate overnight stays. A quaint tea room makes an ideal spot to nibble on a hot scone with jam & cream accompanied by a Devonshire tea. The crew are friendly and answer any questions the passengers can think of. Near the end of the paddle steamer’s trip, the Murray Princess surges on to the scene. Her magnificent majesty and sheer size almost stealing the lime-light from the PS Marion. Both paddle wheeled driven vessels cruise the river from their permanent moorings at Port Mannum in South Australia. This beautiful river township is 85 kilometres from SA’s capitol Adelaide. A group of friends got together and took an afternoon voyage up and downstream the Murray meandering at a speed that lets you take in the surroundings. Photographic opportunities were everywhere as the crew went about their business such as practising the overboard drill with the ‘work boat’ in support. The bird wildlife along this reach is amazing. This is an adventure for young and old alike, whether staying overnight or taking a day trip.
