Should a religious artist who chooses to perform only for women pay a professional price for it? That was the question at the center of this week’s program. At Ulpan, we hosted Racheli Meshkovitz, Moran Shmueloff, Moriah Shir-El, and Rika Razel for a conversation about the place of religious women in the world of culture – between faith, creativity, and public policy. We talked about the gap between the desire to maintain a religious lifestyle and the possibility of making a living from creativity, the question of whether the state should also support culture that appeals only to a female audience, and the feeling of many female artists that they fall between the lines: too religious for the mainstream, and not always receiving the support frameworks that exist in other sectors. We also addressed the question of whether women-only events narrow the public space – or rather expand it and allow many women to consume culture without giving up their faith.
