2025 Inner Freedom Prize 2025 Moron Grand Prize from the French Academy "Luminous." Psychologies magazine Brother François Cassingena-Trévedy, retired to the heart of the Auvergne region after decades of monastic life in Benedictine abbeys, offers here a unique journal, its rhythm dictated as much by the "works and days" of a highland people—those of the Cézallier plateau in the Cantal region—as by the succession of feasts in the liturgical year. As the pages unfold, the reader understands that there is a correspondence, if not an equivalence, between the ordinary time of the humblest tasks, subject to the vagaries of the seasons and the animals, and the liturgical time that elevates the soul through its rites and chants. The stable then appears "as sacred as the church," milking becomes a "cultic exercise," and cow dung "the material for a poem." There is no provocation in these surprising pronouncements, only the lived experience of a monk who has chosen to embrace the peasant condition, much as the philosopher Simone Weil once sought to embrace the working class. In doing so, through his poetic writing, he contributes to the promotion of a rural world now facing hardship, and to the rehabilitation of the term "peasant," which he even goes so far as to attribute to this "hidden God" to whom he dedicates his Gregorian melodies daily.
