Makiko Takada - Joy (1974) [70s Japanese melancholic proto-City-Pop]
Album: MAKIKO First Year: 1974 Label: Polydor, Yamaha (re-issue) Music & lyrics, Vocals: Makiko Takada Melancholic song from Japanese singer-songwriter Makiko Takada. Released in 1974 as part of the album "MAKIKO First", before disco was a "thing" and before city-pop/new-music became a trend in Japan as well. "MAKIKO First" is probably one of the most underrated debut albums from early to mid 1970s; a diverse, multi-texture material with strong songwriting and helped by explorative musical arrangements that were ahead of its time. One of the studio musicians in this album is guitarist Masayoshi Takanaka, a notable influential figure in the development of Japanese "city-pop" music. Highly recommended! Despite of her noticeable influence to other Japanese city-pop singer-songwriters in the 1980s, Makiko Takada only managed to release 2 albums (+ a handful of singles) between 1974 and 1978. She also released another album 声 in 1998.
