Vehicles that tow semitrailers and connect to them using fifth-wheel couplings (FWC) are called tractor units. The KAMAZ-5410 belongs to this type of vehicle. For almost 50 years, this vehicle has been plying the roads not only of Russia but also of four dozen other countries around the world. Only the VAZ-2101, known as the "Kopeyka," can boast such an impressive track record. What's the secret to the KAMAZ-5410's longevity? Let's find out. History of the KAMAZ-5410 The plan was to establish production of these tractor units at the ZIL plant: in the early 1970s, they even began testing prototypes. However, something went wrong, and the project was transferred to the Kama Automobile Plant. The vehicle was based on a three-axle heavy-duty truck, which was manufactured under the designation 5320. Serial production of the KAMAZ-5410 truck tractor began in 1976. However, Soviet citizens were able to see the first example two years earlier, at a demonstration on November 7th, which was timed to coincide with the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Soviet automobile industry. The truck was assembled in the experimental shop of the plant on the Kama River. In 1975, during the 30th anniversary of Victory Day, a column of 10 trucks—one for each of the USSR's Hero Cities—appeared in the parade. It was an impressive sight, and the story behind its creation is deeply moving: workers voluntarily worked a 100-day shift to assemble these trucks in the experimental shop. The KAMAZ-5410 received the State Quality Mark not only for this history but also for its technical characteristics and reliability. Such a vehicle cannot be of poor quality. It enjoyed great demand in the national economy and remained in production for a record 30 years. Had production not ceased, the truck fleet would have numbered approximately 280,000 units.
