WHAT TRIGGERED THIS CHANGE? | In his final days as Speaker of Congress, Fernando Rospigliosi is once again at the center of controversy. Today, he is one of the main political operatives of Fujimorism and a staunch ally of Keiko Fujimori. However, he wasn't always the figure we know today. Interviews and records from over a decade ago show a completely different Rospigliosi: anti-Fujimorist, critical of Fuerza Popular, and a harsh critic of a party he accused of acting as a "steamroller" against democratic institutions. Today, however, his detractors attribute to him precisely what he once denounced. As Speaker of Congress, he has been criticized for prioritizing projects aligned with the interests of Fuerza Popular in plenary sessions. Added to this are his stances on security and justice: the man who once questioned police and military excesses, and even warned of their ties to Alberto Fujimori's dictatorship, now supports laws that, according to his critics, favor impunity for police and military personnel, as well as justifying repressive actions by law enforcement. The shift also extends to his discourse on terrorism and human rights. In an interview with César Hildebrandt, Rospigliosi went so far as to claim that accusations related to terrorism were exaggerated. Years later, he ended up adopting the opposite narrative, labeling opponents and protesters critical of Dina Boluarte's government and Congress as terrorists. His political transformation has been so radical that many continue to wonder what motivated this change. He, so far, offers no answers.
