I see some bass players put much of their focus into their pedalboards instead of getting a balanced tone from the instrument itself. The instrument setup and maintenance along with the nuances of playing should be a big part of the skill set of a bassist seeking superior tone. Its hard to hold down the low end when some of your strings have no low end body. I guess some think its the "soundmans job" to even out the notes and eq their signal into submission. I think the output signal provided from the bassist to the FOH engineer should be as close to studio ready as possible. I'm always trying to up my game.
