According to the ancient and authoritative text of the Shiva Purana, specifically within the second volume of the Rudra Samhita, simply undertaking the deep listening (Shravana) of these divine tales can cleanse the mind and ultimately lead a soul to liberation or Moksha. In the early stages of the universe, the creator Brahma found that the work of creation was not progressing well. To aid in this, he used his thoughts and breath to create ten mind-born sons, known as Manas Putra. Among these great sages were Marichi, Atri, Pulaha, Daksha, and Narada. Shortly after their creation, a beautiful woman emerged from Brahma's mind; she was named Sandhya (twilight), and her exquisite beauty instantly distracted Brahma and all his mind-born sons. Immediately following this event, a striking, golden-hued being emerged—this was the divine manifestation or Prakatya of the god of desire. Because he could take any form he desired, he was called Kama. The sages gave him several other names based on his overwhelming traits: he was called Manmatha because he completely agitated and churned the mind, Madana because he intoxicated and delighted others, Darpaka because he was born filled with pride, and Kandarpa because his immense power had no match. Brahma assigned this golden being a monumental task: to use desire and lust as the engine to drive the infinite creation of the universe forward. To accomplish this, Kama was armed with a bow and five special flower arrows representing different emotional states: Harana (to gladden), Rochana (to attract), Mohana (to delude), Shoshana (to wither in distress), and Marana (to kill by burning in lust). Brahma declared that no living being could escape this power—not the preserver Vishnu, not the destroyer Shiva (also known as Rudra), and not even the most disciplined ascetic Yogi. To test his newly acquired cosmic power, Kama fired his arrows at his own creator, Brahma, and the surrounding sages. Overcome by a sudden, extraordinary lust, the creator and his sons lost their mental resolve and began staring at Sandhya, their minds completely corrupted by desire. The chaotic situation was only halted when the embodiment of righteousness, Dharma, intervened.
