The AI Prep Trap Most D&D GMs Are Falling Into

AI can be an incredible tool for D&D prep… but it can also become a trap. In this video, I’m talking about the danger of using AI too much when prepping your Dungeons & Dragons sessions. As a full-time professional Game Master running multiple games every week, I’ve experimented heavily with AI for maps, tokens, NPCs, stat blocks, encounter ideas, village layouts, and story hooks. And here’s what I’ve learned: AI is amazing for helping you build visual assets, organize locations, create tokens, generate maps, and speed up the practical parts of prep. But when it comes to the soul of your game, your villains, your encounters, your story hooks, your weird creative instincts, your human imagination still matters most. Sometimes AI doesn’t save you time. Sometimes it gives you 15 pages of stuff you now have to read, fix, cut, rewrite, and reshape. And sometimes, it’s faster and better to trust your own creative spark from the beginning. This isn’t an anti-AI rant. I use AI constantly. But I think Game Masters need to use it carefully, intentionally, and in the right places. If you’re a Dungeon Master, professional GM, or tabletop RPG creator trying to figure out how to use AI without letting it take over your game, this video is for you. Run better games. Prep smarter. And don’t outsource the soul of your D&D campaign.
