Things to Do in El Medano #Tenerife - Attractions & Travel Tips

El Médano or the "The sand dune" is a town in the municipality of Granadilla de Abona, on the island of Tenerife, one of the Canary Islands. It is located about 11 kilometers from the town of Granadilla, reaching an average altitude of 75 meters above sea level. The town is divided into five centers: El Médano, Arenas del Mar, El Cabezo, El Topo and Ensenada Pelada. A place of strong winds, it has been the site for various windsurfing competitions and championships. Therefore, El Médano is considered one of the world's best windsurfing/kitesurfing locations. There is a large town square in front of the main beach, which holds many local fiestas, especially during the summer months and an annual public firework display across the bay. Around that square are many bars and restaurants. El Médano is close to south Tenerife airport, so there is some aircraft noise. The flight path is about 1km north of the beachfront, but the airport is not too busy. The town is a traditional family resort, it is safe and friendly with families enjoying the beach and restaurants. Spanish families are often out on weekends. Right outside of El Médano, is Montaña Roja or the Red Mountain in English, a cone volcano. Rising 171 meters above the sea it does not only pose as an impressive sight when viewed from the surrounding area but it also gives a great view from the top.
