JAKARTA (May 20) - The Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) under Minister Trenggono demonstrated its readiness in safeguarding the sovereignty of the Republic of Indonesia's fisheries management. Surveillance operations conducted during the Eid al-Fitr holiday even succeeded in netting six illegal fishing vessels in the North Natuna Sea on Sunday (May 16, 2021). "Our commitment is clear; we will not slacken our surveillance at sea, including during the Eid holiday. Our surveillance vessels will continue to conduct surveillance," said Antam Novambar, Acting Director General of Marine Resources and Fisheries Surveillance, who is also the Secretary General of the KKP. Antam explained that the surveillance operation conducted by the KP. The Tiger Shark 01, captained by Captain Samson, successfully disabled six Vietnamese-flagged fishing vessels: BD 30487 TS, BD 30317 TS, BD 30535 TS, BD 30990 TS, BD 31184 TS, and BD 93742 TS. The six vessels were found to be illegally fishing for squid in the North Natuna Sea. The vessels have been ad hoc transported to the Pontianak PSDKP Station for further legal proceedings. "We have secured a total of 36 crew members along with several pieces of evidence, including squid," explained Antam. Meanwhile, Director of Fleet Monitoring and Operations, Pung Nugroho Saksono, who led the implementation of "Operation Lebaran Laut Natuna," stated that his team continues to work to secure Indonesian waters. Ipunk also stated that the operation's success was due to the support of data analysis from the Control Center (Pusdal) and air surveillance. "We had indeed detected the presence of these vessels, so we immediately ordered an interception," said Ipunk. The arrest of these six Vietnamese-flagged vessels adds to the long list of fishing vessels seized by the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries' Directorate General of Marine and Fisheries Resources and Fisheries Resources. A total of 92 vessels were prosecuted in 2021, consisting of 70 Indonesian fishing vessels violating regulations and 22 foreign fishing vessels for illegal fishing (6 Malaysian-flagged vessels and 16 Vietnamese-flagged vessels). The Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries also continues to demonstrate its commitment to maintaining the sustainability of marine and fisheries resources by arresting 55 individuals who engaged in destructive fishing practices such as bombing, electrocuting, and poisoning.
