Murilo Bottrel instagram.com/murilobottrel/ -21.725827291890123, -44.98336734576396 About the location São Thomé das Lestras, its name is due to a legend about the supposed finding at the end of the eighteenth century of a statue of São Tomé in a grotto by João Antão, an escaped slave of João Francisco Junqueira, along with a perfectly written letter (impossible for an illiterate slave). Another version of the legend says that the letter was delivered in the cave to João Antão by a man in white robes. Presenting the letter to its former owner, as ordered by the white-robed master, João Antão would have obtained his manumission, as João Francisco Junqueira would have been very impressed by the slave's report and would have even ordered the construction of a church next to the aforementioned grotto, which today is located in what is the Center of São Tomé das Letras. It is believed that João Francisco Junqueira's son, Gabriel Francisco Junqueira, is buried under the altar of the church, the current Mother Church. The toponym's "das Letras" refers to the rock inscriptions that can still be seen in the cave where the statue of St. Thomas would have been found.
