I like lure fishing. When I have a choice I use artificial lures. But I also like catching, and sometimes you just have to “match the hatch,” as they say in fly fishing. In the mullet run show, I was able to use lures to pick off a few fish—sharks, jacks and kingfish—around the schools of mullet, but the tarpon were so focused on the live mullet that, for a day and a half, I only got one lure bite. There were just too many mullet! When we switched to live bait it was a game changer. We got a bite immediately. Those tarpon were able to pick out the bait that was struggling on our hook, even among all the other mullet. That’s how we got our bites.
