The federal government presented the Universal Health Service project, which aims to integrate the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS), the Institute for Social Security and Services for State Workers (ISSSTE), the IMSS-Bienestar program, and Pemex services into a single network to serve the entire population regardless of their affiliation. As a first step, a single card will be implemented that will also serve as official identification and will allow access to medical services at different institutions, with the goal of reducing travel and improving care. The plan envisions that, starting in 2027, universal care will be guaranteed for emergencies, high-risk pregnancies, heart attacks, and other illnesses, while by 2028, the complete exchange of medical services between institutions will be consolidated.
