Nissan Leaf brake fluid change - how to guide

This video shows you how to do a Nissan Leaf brake fluid change. The car featured here is a 2015 1st generation Nissan Leaf with about 25,000 miles. Brake fluid is hygroscopic, meaning it absorbs moisture from the air. Over time, this makes it less good as brake fluid and if left for a long time, the moisture can cause corrosion in the braking system. Nissan recommend the brake fluid is changed every 2 years or 36,000 miles, whichever comes first. For this job I recommend 1 litre of DOT 3 brake fluid from a new sealed container. The first step is to remove as much of the old brake fluid as possible from the master cylinder reservoir. This minimizes the amount of old brake fluid that has to be pushed through the brake lines and calipers, before the new fluid starts to come through. I used an older version of the Mityvac MV8020 brake bleeding kit to remove brake fluid from the master cylinder reservoir. You could use a basting pipette with a piece of flexible tube on the end. Having removed the old brake fluid I topped up the reservoir with fresh fluid, then replaced the caps on the brake fluid bottle and master cylinder reservoir. Starting at the right front wheel, I attached my sophisticated brake bleeding apparatus, consisting of a plastic bottle, some PVC tubing and a bicycle spoke bent into a hook to hang it up. With the tube attached to the bleed nipple, I opened the bleed nipple and brake fluid started to flow into the tube. The next step is to pump the brake pedal, slowly on and slowly off, to pump the fresh fluid from the master cylinder reservoir and through the lines and caliper. Try not to press the pedal right to the floor and make sure the reservoir level is checked and topped up regularly to make sure it doesn't run low and allow air into the system. Once the fresh fluid comes through the bleed nipple, tighten it up and move on to the next one. The order suggested in the Nissan workshop manual is right front, left front, right rear, left rear. I try to make sure the entire litre of fluid has gone through by the time I've done all 4 wheels. I had the front of the car jacked up for this job, but that was mostly because I'd just been changing the brake discs and pads. I think it could be done without jacking the car up and removing the wheels. I certainly managed to do the rear calipers with the wheels on and the car on the ground. 0:00 Introduction 0:10 Removing old fluid from the master cylinder reservoir 4:07 Introducing my bleeding bottle 4:25 Bleeding the right front brake 9:07 Closing remarks #Nissanleaf #brake #fluid andrewfixes.com
