In this lecture, Professor Zach Murphy guides you through the anatomy and function of the cerebellum, a critical structure for the coordination and fine-tuning of motor activity. We begin by examining its external anatomy, identifying the two cerebellar hemispheres, the central vermis, and the three lobes—anterior, posterior, and flocculonodular—each associated with specific functional regions. The surface of the cerebellum is covered with tightly folded folia, which increase its surface area for processing vast amounts of sensory and motor information. We then explore the cerebellar peduncles—superior, middle, and inferior—connecting the cerebellum to the midbrain, pons, and medulla. Inside, we examine the cerebellar cortex, which is organized into three layers: the molecular layer, the Purkinje cell layer, and the granular layer. Deep within the white matter, we highlight the four pairs of deep cerebellar nuclei—the dentate, emboliform, globose, and fastigial nuclei—which serve as the primary output centers of the cerebellum. Functionally, the lecture explains how the cerebellum integrates sensory input from the spinal cord, brainstem, and cerebral cortex to coordinate voluntary movements, maintain posture, and preserve balance. We discuss its role in motor learning, including the fine-tuning of movements through feedback loops and its involvement in the smooth execution of complex tasks like speech articulation and rapid alternating movements. The lecture also emphasizes how the cerebellum’s three functional divisions—vestibulocerebellum, spinocerebellum, and cerebrocerebellum—contribute to equilibrium, ongoing movement control, and motor planning.
