The name "paulownia" originated from a mistake by German naturalists Philipp Siebold and Joseph Zuccarini. They wanted to name the plant after Anna Pavlovna (1795-1865), the daughter of Emperor Paul I. However, naming the genus Anna was impossible, as the genus already existed, and they considered the patronymic Pavlovna to be a middle name. Paulownia wood is light and soft; in China and Japan, it is used to make musical instruments, furniture, small crafts, cutting boards, as well as alpine skis and snowboards.
