The National Portrait Gallery is facing backlash after a video installation claimed Winston Churchill deliberately starved Indians during the 1943 Bengal famine. Critics say the work twists history, ignores the famine’s wider causes such as natural disasters, wartime disruption and local failures, and wrongly paints Churchill as using starvation as a weapon. The taxpayer-funded gallery says the film reflects the artist’s personal views and that it supports freedom of expression, but complaints have now been made over what many will see as a politically loaded attack on Britain’s past.
