However, the situation changed in Southeast Asia. Indonesia's Jakarta-Bandung high-speed rail project chose China, the Lao-China railway started operating, Thailand's high-speed rail connected to China, and Vietnam began to reassess the Chinese experience. This wasn't simply about whose trains were faster; rather, China used capital, construction timelines, technology transfer, industrial support, and geopolitical strategy to play a different game. Has the myth of the Japanese Shinkansen truly been shattered? And why has Chinese high-speed rail been able to turn the tide in Southeast Asia? This episode will explain everything clearly. Based on the latest data: The Japanese Shinkansen remains very strong in terms of safety and punctuality. Official data from JR Central shows that the Tokaido Shinkansen has not had any accidents resulting in passenger deaths or injuries since its operation, and its average delay time in fiscal year 2023 was 1.6 minutes per train. The Jakarta-Bandung high-speed rail project is a landmark case of China's competition in Southeast Asian high-speed rail. Reuters reported that China offered a more attractive proposal when competing with Japan for the Jakarta-Bandung high-speed rail project in 2015. The Jakarta-Bandung high-speed rail was subsequently announced by Indonesian President Joko Widodo in 2023, with a project scale of approximately US$7.3 billion. The Jakarta-Bandung high-speed rail project has not been without its costs. Reuters also reported on cost overruns, and Indonesia subsequently discussed debt restructuring with China. Vietnam is also studying high-speed rail connections with China, having explicitly expressed its desire to learn from China's railway experience while also seeking support from Japan. Japan is not entirely out of the running. The Mumbai-Ahmedabad high-speed rail in India is a significant example of the export of Japan's Shinkansen technology.
