Er erfand das Telefon vor Bell — und starb unbekannt | Dokumentarfilm
He was the first to transmit the human voice through a wire, giving the world a word everyone knows today—the telephone. And yet, Johann Philipp Reis died unrecognized and almost forgotten at the age of only forty, two years before another man would reap the glory for this invention. In this comprehensive biographical documentary, we tell the moving story of a quiet genius who co-founded modern communications technology without receiving the recognition he deserved during his lifetime. The film follows Johann Philipp Reis from his childhood as an orphaned baker's son in the old imperial city of Gelnhausen, through his school years in the Huguenot village of Friedrichsdorf, to his work as a teacher at the prestigious Garnier Institute. We witness how curiosity about the structure of the human ear gave rise to the idea of electrical sound transmission, how Reis built the first telephone in his small workshop, and how he demonstrated it publicly for the first time on October 26, 1861. The famous phrase "the horse doesn't eat cucumber salad" became one of the first sentences spoken over a telephone. This documentary also sheds light on the tragic aspects of his life—the lack of recognition from the scientific community, the widespread distribution of his devices throughout Europe without personal acclaim, his battle with tuberculosis, and his early death. We examine in detail and, above all, objectively the ongoing debate between Philipp Reis and Alexander Graham Bell regarding their respective contributions, consciously presenting both perspectives and avoiding any one-sided judgment. A film about inventiveness, perseverance, and the belated recognition bestowed upon one of the most important pioneers of telephony. This contribution is intended as an educational and documentary exploration of a historical figure and his era. It is aimed at anyone interested in the history of science, German inventors, and the history of communication technology. A channel by Alexander Weiss.
