Why Did the Army Send One Man to Save a Beaten Army in Korea?

In December 1950, the U.S. Eighth Army was in the longest retreat in American history — beaten and demoralized after China's massive intervention in the Korean War. Walton Walker was dead in a jeep accident, Washington was quietly planning a total evacuation, and Douglas MacArthur was directing the war from Tokyo. Then the Army made a desperate bet: it sent one man, General Matthew Ridgway, to save a broken army. What Ridgway did over the next hundred days is one of the great turnarounds in military history. He relieved failed commanders, drove his troops off the roads and onto the high ground, restored their will to fight, and rebuilt the Eighth Army into a force that stopped the Chinese cold at Chipyong-ni, held at the Imjin and Kapyong, retook Seoul, and pushed the front back to the 38th parallel. This is the full story of how he did it, and why it worked. But we ask the harder question too. Was it really one man, or had the Chinese simply outrun their supply lines? Ridgway gets full credit here, and honest scrutiny — the leadership, the firepower, the timing, and the reason history still remembers MacArthur while the general who actually saved Korea remains largely forgotten. Sources include Ridgway's own memoirs The Korean War and Soldier, T.R. Fehrenbach's This Kind of War, David Halberstam's The Coldest Winter, Clay Blair's The Forgotten War, and the U.S. Army official histories by Appleman and Mossman. Full sources below.
