He leaves his home, his love and his family to march to war alongside his companions, and finds out how thrilling, glorious and exciting but also how grim, gruesome and depressing a battle can be. The musicserves as a musical soundtrack to the experiences of this character. For the music, Thomas selected pieces by John Dowland and Tobias Hume. Hume was of course a virtuoso viol player, but also a professional soldier. His music published in his “Musicall Humours” has a lot of military references fits very well to the lute. In the preface to his publication, Hume claimed that “from henceforth, the gamba violl shall with ease yield full various and as deviceful music as the lute”. This line angered John Dowland, which prompted him to start a battle of words with Hume. He wrote his rebuttal of Hume’s ideas in the preface to “A Pilgrimes Solace”, defending the lute as the undisputed principal Elizabethan instrument. In between the main pieces some short military-themed fragments will be played, taken from pieces by Hume and Dowland. They serve to create the atmosphere of a battle even more, and lead the listener from one piece to the next. The concert will be played in one continuous movement.
