DPD's Women In Blue - Captain Jackie Werner

She’s a mother raising her two-year-old son, but she’s also breaking barriers as a female officer with the Durham Police Department. In this #WomenInBlue video, we introduce you to DPD Captain Jackie Werner, who is the Executive Officer to the Deputy Chief of Field Operations. Captain Werner was born into a family of police officers. Her mother was a police officer back in the 1980s. Her father retired as the Chief of Police in Creedmoor. Also eager to serve her community, she went through the BLET (Basic Law Enforcement Training) Academy at Vance-Granville Community College. As a timid young woman, she was told she would never make it as a police officer. She said this only pushed her to work harder and make sure she graduated. In May of 2002, she became an officer with the Oxford Police Department. In 2005, a Durham Police Officer asked Werner to go on a ride-along because he thought she would be a good fit at Durham PD. She enjoyed the fast pace of Durham and decided to apply to work for DPD. She went through DPD’s lateral academy in October of 2005. Since joining DPD, she has worked her way up through the ranks and worked on uniform patrol, criminal investigations, the training division, public affairs, and internal affairs. She is also one of two female specialized driver instructors for Durham PD. As a driving instructor, she teaches police recruits driving maneuvers to help them complete the practical driving exercises which are required as part of DPD’s basic law enforcement training program. When she was going through the academy, she always wanted to see women serve as instructors. She made it a goal to become a female driver instructor in the hopes of inspiring more females to do the same thing. Captain Werner encourages more women in the community to pursue a career in law enforcement. “Having a son, I want him to see that he has a mother who is capable of doing things that people don’t think that she could. I want him to encourage women in his life as he grows up to be able to be who they want to be,” she says.
