ORQUIDÁRIO e JABUTICABEIRA no quintal dos sonhos – #ALoucaDasPlantas ep. 5

Can you imagine a house in São Paulo that could fit an orchid nursery, a vegetable garden, an herb garden, and a jabuticaba tree? This was the challenge of the fifth episode of "A Louca das Plantas" (Plant Crazy) on the GNT channel. Our gardener Carol Costa transformed a backyard into a veritable mini-farm. With creative solutions and the right tricks, the dull lawn even gained a fruit tree! The star of the episode was the jabuticaba tree. The native fruit tree most desired by 10 out of 10 "plant crazy" people appeared right in the middle of the yard, but it was a long journey for the tree. From the "Jabuticabeira Produzindo" producer to Matheus and Alice's house, the jabuticaba tree needed time to grow. The tree underwent two processes to ensure its health and prevent leaf and fruit loss upon arrival at its final location. The first is tapping, which removes soil from a rim of soil around the plant, replacing it with sand. The second, more laborious process is curing, where the tapped tree is transplanted after three to four months into its final box, where it is cared for and fertilized for up to nine months. Once the plant was transported to the backyard, our crazy Piracicaba native provided a stylish wooden box (duly waterproofed) that serves as a bench and simultaneously hides the enormous pot. Keeping the tree in its original pot, without replanting it in the ground, allows it to gain height, as the jabuticaba tree has low branches. And an important tip: full sun, plenty of watering, and plenty of fertilizer ensure the jabuticaba tree bears abundant fruit almost year-round. For fertilization, we used bokashi, also known as biokashi, not only on the tree but also on all the plants (edible and ornamental) in this episode. In the vegetable garden, the problem was the couple's cat. Our gardener Carol Costa raised the beds using crates, which makes it easier to sow, care for, and harvest the vegetables—the residents' backs will thank her! This elevation is also great for preventing dogs from peeing on the plants, but it doesn't work with cats. Against felines (and birds), a structure covered with chicken wire helps protect the crops. Another way to keep pets away from a vegetable garden or orchard is by planting strong-smelling plants, such as rosemary, basil, and boldinho—they act as organic, non-toxic repellents. Right at the entrance to the garden-orchard-orchard, the plant-loving woman created a raised bed using bricks without mortar. And, to ensure cats don't dig up the garden, chicken wire (the kind with smaller meshes, known as chicken wire) was used again, but this time buried a few centimeters below the surface. So, when the kitten starts digging, she gets her claws tangled—although safe, it's quite unpleasant for the felines, who, bothered, will look for a more appropriate and comfortable bathroom. Finally, a sea of orchids that no orchid lover would find fault with, including several exotic Vanda orchids with their roots fully exposed. An orchid nursery was built using bamboo structures, taking advantage of a space where a water tank already existed. The top slats were placed close together so they can create shade without the need for shade. Orchids are delicate plants like babies, but they need sunlight to flower; two hours of morning or late afternoon sun are enough. As for the vegetable garden and the jabuticaba tree, no sunscreen: the girls are free to play in the sun all day long.
