Karate is about the hips first and then the other parts of the body coming into play picking up energy along the way." — Masao Kawasoe In Kawasoe’s teaching methodology, the arms and legs are merely delivery vehicles. The true kinetic energy of a strike is born in the pelvic bowl and the deep core muscles (Hara). His style breaks down into three distinct mechanical phases: The Ground Anchor: Using deep, compressed stances (Zenkutsu-dachi or Kokutsu-dachi) to draw ground-reaction force from the floor. The Hip Rotation/Thrust: A sudden, violent snapping of the hips from an open position (Hanmi) to a closed, squared position (Shomen). The Wave Acceleration: The energy generated by that hip snap traveling up the spine, through the shoulders, down the arm, and crystallizing exactly at the point of impact (Kime).
