Oronsay in 20 minutes
A "fast" drive from Scalasaig to Oronsay Priory, crossing the tidal sands of the Strand at low water. Visitors advised not to drive across the Strand, as the salt water corrodes vehicles and the route is not well defined and drivers often get bogged down with no rescue service available for such ventures. It can be crossed only at the lowest tides, on bare foot or in wellies, where you have to “follow the tide out” to get maximum time to visit Oronsay, the Priory and the RSPB reserve. Oronsay is now privately owned by an American widow, and the RSPB farm the island for her. I gained permission locally to drive across.
