Today: Key Supreme Court decisions, and Luigi Mangione's federal trial is delayed
Today as it Happened on Monday, June 29, 2026: Monday marked opinion day at the U.S. Supreme Court, where eight cases remained pending. Seven of them were considered major cases. The remaining cases fell into three main categories: elections, presidential power, and transgender rights. The Supreme Court on Monday ruled against President Donald Trump in his effort to remove Federal Reserve Gov. Lisa Cook, leaving her on the central bank’s board while her lawsuit continues. Trump fired Cook in August 2025 over allegations that she committed mortgage fraud. Cook has denied the allegations and has not been charged with a crime. The court also upheld a Mississippi law that allows mail-in ballots to be counted if they are postmarked by Election Day and received up to five business days later. In a 5-4 decision, the justices ruled that federal election law requires ballots to be cast by Election Day but does not require election officials to receive them by that date. Luigi Mangione’s federal trial in the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson will now begin in January, a judge said Monday, delaying it from the fall. U.S. District Judge Margaret Garnett said she was postponing the federal trial so Mangione’s lawyers can focus on his state murder trial, which is scheduled to begin on Sept. 8. And President Donald Trump downplayed the importance of a newly passed bipartisan housing bill aimed at making homeownership more affordable. Speaking with reporters at the White House on Monday, Trump called the bill “unimportant” and “a yawn.” “I think it’s so unimportant compared to the SAVE America Act,” Trump said. ------------------------------------- Follow Scripps News on other platforms— Join our newsletter at https://bit.ly/2q1tepr Follow us on Facebook: / scrippsnews Follow us on X: https://x.com/scrippsnews Follow us on Instagram: / scrippsnews Follow us on TikTok: / scrippsnews
