They are either masculine or feminine. “un” is used before masculine nouns (e.g. un gatto = a cat, un amico = a friend) “uno” is used before masculine nouns which starts with: “s+ consonant”,”z-”, “ps-”, “y-”, “gn-” (e.g. uno studente = a student, uno zaino = a rucksack, uno psicologo = a psychologist, uno gnomo = a gnome) “una” is used before feminine nouns starting with a consonant (e.g. una penna) “un’” is used before feminine nouns starting with a vowel - a, e, i, o, u - (e.g. un’arancia = an orange).
