Parnitha Breach | At the epicenter of the deadly Athens earthquake on 09.07.1999 The 1999 Parnitha earthquake, commonly known as the 1999 Athens earthquake, with a magnitude of 5.9 on the Richter Scale, occurred on September 7, 1999, 14:56:50 local time, and caused 143 deaths and damage reaching 3 billions of euros. It is the deadliest earthquake of the last 50 years and the natural disaster with the greatest cost in terms of material damage that has ever occurred in Greece. The earthquake, although not particularly strong and with a total duration of only 15 seconds, caused a lot of damage due to its proximity to Athens, centered 18 kilometers from the city center, between Acharnes and the Parnitha National Park, as well as the small focal point deep, from 9 to 14 kilometers. There were few cracks on the surface of the ground and it was difficult to find the origin of the earthquake. The Geodynamic Institute of the National Observatory of Athens initially announced that the earthquake was caused by a 15 kilometer long fault that covers the area between Penteli and Parnitha. Based on the study of satellite data examining the height deformation of the ground which was later confirmed by a seismological study, and was accepted in 2008 by the Geodynamic Institute, it was found that two earthquakes, magnitude 5.8 and 5.5, occurred in different rifts and 3.5 seconds apart from each other. Greece is a particularly seismic country, as it is located in a complex tectonic zone, between the African, Eurasian and Anatolian tectonic plates, while part of southern Greece is located on the Aegean plate. The Anatolian plate is pushing the Aegean plate southwestward at a rate of 3 cm per year against the Eurasian plate, while the African plate is subducting beneath the Aegean plate at a rate of 4 cm per year. The victims of the deadly earthquake in Athens The numbers that capture the magnitude of the disaster are shocking: 111 of the victims of the earthquake, 36 people died of injuries, 38 people had life-threatening injuries and 31 died of suffocation. Most of the deaths were due to building collapses, three of them factories. Of the rest, six died of myocardial infarction, two from injuries when they jumped from the building they were in, and one from being hit by an object. It was estimated that at least another 85 were rescued from the wreckage, 2,000 were injured, and 50,000 were left homeless. Camps created to temporarily house the homeless were still in use 10 years later. 39 people died, including two pregnant women, in the six-story building of Ricomex, in Menidi, which housed the companies Ricomex and Estia Trade. The company filed for bankruptcy in 2004. Since the case went to trial in 2007, of the 33 defendants in the factory collapse, all have been acquitted for reasons that are unclear. Relatives of some of the victims were given compensations of up to €17,000 for a dead sibling, €30,000 for a dead parent and €40,000 for each dead child.
