Bürglen – A spectacular recovery of a truck that plunged more than 50 meters into the depths on Thursday took place in freezing temperatures on Saturday afternoon. The first recovery attempt on Thursday failed and caused worse damage. A truck that got stuck plunged down a slope near Bürglen during a recovery attempt on Thursday around 5:30 p.m. Fortunately, no one was inside the vehicle. According to police, the 34-year-old truck driver for a parcel service had previously driven along the municipal road from Bürglen toward Schmitzingen. Since there is only one towing company on the Upper Rhine that can recover vehicles weighing over 3.5 tons, as owner Johannnes Strittmatter reports, the truck could not be recovered until Saturday afternoon. "Because the truck was wedged between the trees and had to be pulled up over a steep edge, the abrasion was so severe that one of the two steel cables, which is rated for up to twelve tons, broke," said Strittmatter. After a brief inspection, it was determined that a tree had to be removed in order to recover the crashed vehicle. Michael Duttlinger, a specialist in forestry and gardening technology, was then called to the scene to remove the tree. Around 4 p.m., the truck was back on solid ground. "The recovery will cost in the high four-figure range," reports Strittmatter. Added to this is the damage to the ground that will have to be repaired and the disposal of the diesel that was drained from the tank at the beginning. Strittmatter would like to encourage drivers in distress to contact a qualified towing company instead of attempting to handle such incidents privately.
