Nazywam się Bella Szwarcman-Czarnota
"My name is Bella Szwarcman-Czarnota. I've spent almost my entire life in Praga, but in reality, I found myself here by accident." […] Bella Szwarcman-Czarnota, a translator of Yiddish, Russian, and French, a poet and writer, a philosopher, an editor and columnist (affiliated with organizations such as the State Scientific Publishing House, the Emanuel Ringelblum Jewish Historical Institute, and the magazine "Midrasz"), an expert on Jewish women, and a resident of Praga, shares her memories of life in Warsaw's Praga district with us. She was born in distant Uzbekistan, but from an early age she has remained connected to Warsaw's Praga district, which remains simply "her place." It's a personal story about growing into the city, about important landmarks on its map, about Jewish neighbors, about people who returned and left, about the district's multifaceted postwar face. It also explores the world of Yiddish, the recovered language of childhood, and the challenges facing the translator. Thanks to Bella Szwarcman-Czarnota, we discover a different, unknown Praga. Concept and screenplay: Jolanta Wiśniewska Screenplay: Krzysztof Gajewski Cinema, sound, editing: Krzysztof Gajewski The film uses photographs and documents from the family collections of Bella Szwarcman-Czarnota and Carlos Marrodan Casas, as well as from the collections of the Museum of Warsaw, the National Digital Archives, and Polona.pl – National Library.
