After being in the business for 15 years, Petula Clark finally had a big US hit record in 1964, when “Downtown” reached #1 in 1964. It also charted at #2 in the UK and #1 in Australia. The ensuing album reached #21 in the US. The song’s original French language title was "Puisque Tu Pars" and that version was released by Pet on her French album, “Petula Clark”, also in 1964. Connie Stevens recorded an English language version, released in the US on Warners in 1965. It reached #53 on the Hot-100.
