Jnanadanandini Devi | First "Modern" Bengali woman | Ardhek Akash

Jnanadanandini Devi - the first "modern" woman of Bengal who introduced the draping of sari alongwith blouse, petticoat that encouraged women to come out of confines. The traditional sari was worn without any of this and was hardly suitable to be worn outside. She had spoken about her life yo Indira, her daughter. Jnanadanandini Devi Devi was born in 1850 in Jessore (presently in Bangladesh). Married at the age of eight to Satyendra Nath Tagore. elder brother of Rabindranath Tagore. Satyendra became the first Indian to pass the Indian Civil Service. As his wife it was but natural for her to accompany her husband to various places. She also hosted parties. But her main contribution would be the draping of sari to Bengali women, which would allow her to go outside the house . She introduced blouse and chemise to be worn underneath. Satyendra was a champion of women's education and rights and encouraged Jnanadanandini to study and truly become a "modern" woman breaking away from the traditional mould. Her sole presence at Viceroy's party without an accompanying husband created a wave of shock that led the men from Tagore family leave the party. She travelled to England with her 3 small children without her husband. She also introduced birthday parties' celebration after coming back from England. She encouraged women of the house to participate in cultural programmes in the house. She passed away in 1941.
