Induction refers to the observation of something specific to obtain a general truth as a conclusion. Deductive Method The deductive method, on the other hand, involves the researcher making an individualization. It starts with general, indisputably true rules to explain something about an individual object. These general rules are called premises. Hypothetico-deductive Method Hypothetico-deductive is the method of trial and error. It consists of identifying a problem and formulating hypotheses to be tested. The hypothetico-deductive method works by starting with a problem—that is, something that has not yet been fully explained because knowledge about it is insufficient. Then, by observing the object of study, the researcher identifies at least one hypothesis and begins testing it. Finally, the hypotheses that failed the tests are discarded, obtaining new insights into the problem. The hypothetical-deductive method is by far the most widely accepted in all fields of science, considered by many to be the only truly logical method. I don't even need to tell you that it's used in practically 100% of undergraduate dissertations, right? Dialectical Method The dialectical method, in turn, is characterized by the confrontation of ideas. In the dialectical method, any concept defined as true must be tested against other ideas in order to obtain a new theory. Generally speaking, the dialectical method comprises three stages: thesis, antithesis, and synthesis.
