This is the world's lightest dive watch weighing in at 51.5 grams including the strap. To put that into real terms, it's a 44m fully functioning 200m water resitant diver, that weighs about the same as a kiwi, or a medium sized egg. That is insane. It is also a masterclass in ingenuity, and responsible manufacture as the majority of the watch is made using recycled materials. The case is a product of UN working with several cutting edge companies to create something really special. It is a mix of titanium, carbon fiber, and a composite called Nylo-foil. A leading titanium production company called TiFast recycled titanium tht originated from the Swiss biomedical industry, and Thyssenkrup, an automotive and marine engineering company had the job of thermally treating and strengthening the material so that it was tougher than nails and perfectly suited to diving application. This was used to make the “bones” of the case, caseback, and movement baseplate and bridges etc. The rest of the case is created using “Nylo-foil” which is a super lightweight carbon composite which is 60% recycled polymer from fishing nets, and 40% recycled carbon fibre from sailing boats. Topping the case, is a 100% recycled carbon fibre bezel, once again reclaimed from the sailing industry. The level of detail and eco-awareness going on here is just fantastic from UN, but it doesnt stop there, why would it?! Grand feu - powdered glass is applied to the base plate, baked in a “great fire” (hence the name) and built up in layers upon layers to create a deep and glossy uniform dial. Guiloche - a similar technique to Grand Feu, but the base plate has been engraved either by hand or using a lathe, and translucent enamel is layered onto the design. The end result is a dial of varying hues that appears to be three dimensional as the enamel picks out the design of the engraving below. Champleve - Another combination of engraving and enamelling, but in this instance a decorative image or pattern is hand engraved into the dial by an engraver and the enameller fills the recessed image using different coloured enamels including delicate shading. Scheider knew that in order to pull off a Phoenix style rise from the ashes, he had to offer something drastically unique to make the company competitive, and more to the point, viable again. His work with the Farnese led to the 1995 Prix Gaia award for history and research after he painstakingly studied and reverse engineered the clock to aid future servicing as it was originally built in 1725 with zero schematics. He also built an exact copy of the Antikythera mechanism, ancient Greek and the oldest example of an analogue computer used to predict astronomical positions and events decades into the future. That is some seriously top level stuff. Huge accolades aside, I think possibly the part of Dr Oechslin’s story that resonates with me the most is a tale of him having a small centimetre square mirror pinned to a beret so that those who annoyed him in daylight were be treated to an unpleasant glare from the sun if he tilted his head at them. The collaboration of Schneider and Oeschlin really put UN on the map as industry leaders. They produced the trilogy of time, which included the world record breaking Astrolabium Gallileo Galilei, introduced automaton watches, and most notably their flagship, the freak in 2001. Schneider passed away in 2011, and Oeschlin moved on from UN to launch Ochs and Junior but the legacy and the innovation of the dynamic duo lives on today with UN receiving award after award for innovation after innovation under the stewardship of Matthieu Haverlan, who is an industry titan and visionary in his own right. At watches and wonders this year, Ulysse Nardin topped the records once again when they unleashed the worlds lightest diving watch, the DIVER AIR which weighs in at 52 grams including the strap which is made from recycled fishing nets. This isnt their first dive watch win though, as in 2001 they created the Aqua Perpetual, the only perpetual calendar on earth that can continue to function at 200 metres below the ocean. Here I am in 2025 regularly saying that “WR is only 20m due to the Perp Cal”
