Kala Academy Repairs To Begin From August 1 After Expert Reports

The repair of Kala Academy's main auditorium is likely to commence from August 1 after expert committees submit their reports on the building's condition, Member Secretary of Kala Academy Shankar Gaonkar said. He said the task force has constituted three expert committees to prepare reports on the auditorium's sound, lighting and acoustics. Their final reports are awaited. For the structural stability assessment, Mr. Pillai from IIT Chennai will be appointed to submit an expert report identifying the defects and recommending the necessary repairs. Based on the report, the Public Works Department (PWD) will prepare the repair estimate before work begins. Gaonkar said the ₹10 crore that had been kept on hold has been earmarked for the repair work. In the first phase, only the main auditorium will undergo restoration. The timeline for completion will be decided after the final expert reports are submitted. He added that repair work on the partially collapsed open-air auditorium has not yet started and will also be taken up only after the task force and expert committees submit their reports. If the cost of repairs exceeds ₹10 crore, the government will be approached for additional funds, he said.
