Opstand tegen Spanje: De republiek der Nederlanden

The revolt is a well-known part of our history. But much remains unknown, even though there are plenty of places in the Netherlands that remind us of it! This episode was filmed in places like the new church in Delft, at Fort Bourtange, in the city museum in Brielle, and near Naarden. (I traveled a lot for this one...) It's easy to think that the Netherlands has always existed. But there was a time when the Netherlands was part of the mighty Spanish Empire. Our fate was determined by Charles V and later his son Philip II. But this would not last. Nobles like William of Orange were dissatisfied with Spanish rule and eventually felt compelled to revolt. The ensuing 80-year war would result in the birth of the modern Netherlands. Episode 4 covers the revolt that followed 1584, how they recovered from the death of William of Orange, the victories the rebels achieved, and the defeats they suffered. Of course, it's difficult to summarize so much history in a video, but we did our best!
