One of the rare American cult bands to achieve mainstream success, they have amassed six Billboard chart albums and three top twenty hits. Their eponymous debut album remained an essential item for record collectors and eventually achieved platinum sales status. Despite splitting in the mid-eighties, The Violent Femmes remained ever popular, reforming in 1989 since when they have toured and recorded continually and have performed well over 2000 gigs to date.
