Open data on Russia’s battlefield performance suggests that the war's trajectory is shifting in Ukraine's favor, at least for now. While Russian forces' rates of advance are stagnating, Ukrainian forces are employing novel tactics and operational concepts to break out of positional warfare. It is too early to tell if Ukrainian forces will successfully reintroduce maneuver warfare. Since the start of 2026, Ukraine’s offensive and defensive operations have achieved strategic and operational effects across the theater. According to Andreas Umland, "Ukraine would not be able to replace the U.S., but it is now the country that has the capability to fight Russia. And right now, in the last weeks, it seems as if Ukraine has finally found a weak point in the functioning of the Russian state and economy. It looks as if the current situation is working in Ukraine's favor. Earlier, a few months ago, I would have said time was working against Ukraine because, in this war of attrition, it looked as if Russia had the larger resources. But now, Ukraine has found this possibility to radically reduce certain Russian resources and cause a wider economic and social crisis in Russia."
