Aluminum sits lower on the Mohs hardness scale than porcelain, meaning it is physically impossible for the foil to scratch the toilet bowl. However, it is harder than mineral deposits. By pouring acidic white vinegar into the bowl to soften the calcium, and vigorously rubbing the ring with a wadded ball of foil, the foil lifts the stain mechanically while a mild chemical reaction polishes the bowl completely clean.
