Can a Muslim woman and man choose to never marry? Assim al Hakeem

Is it permissible in Islam for a man or woman to never get married? Does a Muslim have an obligation to marry, or is it simply a recommended choice? The Prophet ﷺ said: "Marriage is part of my sunnah, and whoever does not follow my sunnah has nothing to do with me. Get married, for I will boast of your great numbers before the nations. Whoever has the means, let him get married, and whoever does not, then he should fast for it will diminish his desire." (Ibn Majah-1846) While marriage is highly encouraged and is the sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ, most scholars agree it is not an absolute obligation for every single person. There are legitimate reasons why a person might choose not to marry: Fear of not being able to fulfill marital duties justly Lack of sexual desire Devoting oneself entirely to worship Inability to provide financially However, one should be cautious, as remaining single without a valid reason may mean abandoning the Prophet's ﷺ sunnah. Those who have the means and desire to marry are strongly encouraged to do so. If a person cannot marry, fasting is prescribed as a shield.
