Even before 2014, Ukrainian history textbooks used the term “Great Patriotic War,” which was eventually replaced with “German-Soviet War.” In Soviet and later Ukrainian schools, history teachers spoke about the longest and bloodiest war of the 20th century on the territory of the former USSR, including Ukraine. The so-called “Great Patriotic War” lasted nearly four years. The full-scale Russo-Ukrainian war is already in its fifth year. To draw parallels, hromadske traveled to the city of Izium in the Kharkiv region. Both in 1942–1943 and today, the city became the scene of fierce battles. Then, as in 2022, the city was under occupation. And often, people’s memories of the horrors they endured sound strikingly similar.
