At the beginning of their career, The Sword were primarily known as a doom metal band, but they have always been just as heavily influenced by hard rock and metal in the vein of Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Slayer, and Iron Maiden, alongside bands like Sleep and The Melvins. Cronise, guitarist Kyle Shutt, bassist Bryan Richie, and drummer Santiago "Jimmy" Vela III. Their debut album, "Age Of Winters," written and produced by Cronise, was released in 2006. “Gods Of The Earth,” also produced by frontman Cronise, was released in 2008 and gave the band their first entry into the US Billboard 200.
