Bruce Lee’s Wooden Dummy Explained | Jeet Kune Do Principles

The Wooden Dummy is a traditional training device, but Bruce Lee did not use it as Wing Chun intended. In this video, I break down how Bruce Lee adapted the Wooden Dummy through Jeet Kune Do principles, focusing on efficiency, structure, timing, and the Five Ways of Attack rather than fixed patterns or choreography. My instructor, Jerry Poteet, personally showed me how Bruce Lee used the Wooden Dummy to refine quality of movement, improve interception, and sharpen functional power—not to memorize forms. This particular Wooden Dummy originates from Wing Chun, but Jeet Kune Do operates on a different set of principles. Because of that, the Dummy cannot assume a Wing Chun role when trained through JKD. The intention, structure, and application are fundamentally different. In this video, I explain how I consolidated and shortened the training, removing unnecessary repetition and adapting the method for modern practitioners—without losing Bruce Lee’s original intent. This is principle-based training, not style preservation.
